Summary Myrtaceae honeys produced in Sierra Morena (southern Spain, Andalusia) are obtained from both Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Myrtus communis, and honeys can be easily confused when classified as they come from the same botanical family. The characterisation was intended on the basis of their physicochemical, sensory and palynological properties. Immature seeds, as well as hypocotyls and cotyledons excised from seedlings of Myrtus communis L., were cultured on media containing half-strength Murashige and Skoog macronutrients (MS/2) with combinations of auxins and cytokinins, in order to study their morphogenetic competence. Somatic embryogenesis was obtained from cotyledons, hypocotyls and 2-month-old immature seeds with 0.1 mg/l 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The percentage of explants showing this primary somatic embryogenesis ranged from 4% for hypocotyls to 12% for 2-month-old immature seeds. In this study, the essential oils obtained from the leaves of Myrtus communis L. stored in a collection orchard located at the experimental station ‘Orleans’ of the Department of Agricultural and Forest Sciences of the University of Palermo (Italy) were investigated. The essential oils, analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, revealed the presence of α-pinene, 1,8-cineole, linalool, limonene and myrtenyl acetate as dominant constituents. Myrtus communis is a Mediterranean shrub widely diffused in Sicily. To promote the cultivation of myrtle, seven wild populations were collected from different areas of Sicily, with the aim to select new candidate cultivars in the frame of a selection program. A collection of nine Myrtus communis samples from different localities of Sicily was evaluated. Morphological traits and production characteristics have been chosen as parameters to arrange the samples into homogeneous groups and to identify the best biotypes for possible future agro-industrial exploitation.
